To outsiders, Florida can sometimes be characterized as bizarre or chaotic, sort of written off as a strange pink flamingo suburbia. I am a New Yorker, born and raised, but I did not wait until my golden years to enjoy the golden sun, browning my skin and softening my bones. This still life explores the beauty and freedom I’ve found by living and creating in the wonderful state of Florida. I mean state not as the imagined boundary, but rather the Florida state of mind. Florida is now my keepsake, its gentle lure pulling me deeper into the parts of myself that have always been there resting beneath the surface. I don’t mind that this state lives in the shadow of its false reputations because it saves it for the ever-deserving souls who love it as much as I do. This place has given me the warmth I desperately need, boundless flora, and the opportunity to create, out of the fray behind the smoke and mirrors that are Florida.
